First Flight in a
Small Airplane |

|
Riding in a small airplane ranks among the things in life that are Priceless! I consider myself to be very fortunate to have a friend that owns an airplane! As co-workers, this man talked of nothing but flying. I found out he was a pilot and an aircraft owner. The reasons for all his blathering about aviation became clear. Finally I was asked if I wanted to go flying. Now, I must admit, there are few things in this world that scare me so flying in a small airplane became number one on my list of things to do. The day of the flight was warm and sunny. When I first laid eyes on the airplane, I fully understood why my co-worker was all smiles each time he flew. Once in the copilot's seat and the necessary preflight checks accomplished, off we flew. Takeoff was fast and exciting. Once in the air it was if I were a bird soaring fast and free. The pilot pointed out various landmarks around the local area. It's amazing how different everything looks from the air. The words of the Bette Midler song “From a Distance” came to mind that day. From a distance, things on the ground didn’t seem to matter because everything looked so peaceful. |
I experienced a “touch and go” along with a 160mph low pass at a country airport. I thought riding a rollercoaster was fun. There’s no way to compare riding in a 1954 Classic Cessna 180 with an amusement park ride. The sense of being birdlike is impossible to describe. This to me is how it feels to ride in a small airplane. One should not leave this earth until having experienced the pleasure of flying in a small airplane. Oh, and I also follow Clay everywhere he goes. | |
